What You Need to Know About Sedation Dentistry

For many people, going to the dentist causes a large amount of unnecessary stress. Nobody needs extra stress, so what do they do? They simply stop going to see their dentist. Having your teeth examined is incredibly important and can save you a lot of trouble when it comes to preventing and treating all sorts of oral conditions that will otherwise get worse over time. Luckily, that no longer has to be an issue. At Forest Lawn Dental Centre, we offer both oral and IV sedation for our patients who get anxiety from simply being inside a dental office. Let our team of dental professionals show you why sedation dentistry might be right for you.

Why you might need dental sedation There is a significant portion of the population that actively avoids going to the dentist because of the anxiety it causes them. Maybe you’ve had a bad experience in the past or just don’t enjoy having so little control over a situation. The point is you’re not alone. There’s no age limit on fear and sedation dentistry could be the key to taking charge of your oral health. The different types of sedation There are two main types of sedation: oral and IV. Each of the two should be used for different reasons. Lets go through the different situations that are ideal for these types of sedation dentistry. • Oral sedation Oral sedation is generally administered in pill form several hours before the procedure takes place. It also helps make the patient feel more relaxed and reduce their anxiety. The difference is that there is a deeper feeling of drowsiness (albeit still conscious) throughout your procedure. Oral sedation is less predictable. People react differently on an individual basis. It’s ideal for patients who are uncomfortable with needles, but still need to feel more relaxed while undergoing routine dental work. • IV sedation IV sedation produces a much deeper sense of calmness and tranquility than its oral counterpart. It’s fast acting, meaning that your anxiety will vanish minutes after the sedatives are administered. IV sedation is predominantly meant for patients who don’t mind needles (no need to add another fear to the list). IV sedation is much more calculated and predictable and can be recalibrated as necessary throughout the procedure. It allows for longer procedures to be done in one sitting instead of having to come back for multiple visits.
